Wired Network
Virtual Private Network
wired Network – usually a large network of interconnected computers and devices. WANs typically span a large geographic area. An example could be a large enterprise that has systems that communicate with each other throughout several offices located in numerous cities and/or countries. Computer Networking is a focus within engineering that deals with communication between computer systems or devices. Computer networking is often considered a sub-discipline of a few areas: telecommunications, computer science, information technology and/or computer engineering. Computer networks rely heavily on the theoretical and practical application of each of these engineering disciplines. ResNet (Residential Network) is the residential computer network service provided to students living at Cornell College. ResNet lets you connect your personal computer directly to the College’s computer network and to the Internet.  The first time you connect to ResNet you should use the wired network port in your dorm room. Your computer must meet minimum system requirement before access to the network will be granted. These system requirements will be verified by Safe Connect. You must have the Safe Connect Enforcer installed and be logged in to access network resources. Follow the links on the left to find instructions for your operating system. If you have any questions or need help installing any applications, please contact the Information Technology Help Desk at extension 4357 and our staff will assist you as soon as possible.
A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure method of accessing University computing resources when you are logged in from an off–campus computer or a laptop you are using to access the Wireless Networking. The VPN creates a secure connection called a tunnel between your computer and the campus network. The tunnel disguises the information you are sending and receiving, so your electronic communications are secure and protected. Enhanced security and privacy are the two main reasons to use VPN. You also have an ability to access University resources such as information on your network drives. This provides you with a safe way of accessing your applications and files as though you are working on the computer in your workstation.

Wireless access points placed throughout the college campus enables users to walk from one side of the campus to the other while being connected to the network the entire time. This breaks the traditional limitations of network access via a physical cable and now allows users to perform computing tasks from anywhere on campus. The increased mobility and flexibility of wireless technology allows for more efficient and productive work.  You must have the Safe Connect Enforcer installed and be logged in to access network resources.
